Review: Larsmont Cottages, glamping along the North Shore of Lake Superior

Updated: Oct 17, 2019

Larsmont Cottages is the perfect getaway spot to take your significant other, family or a group of friends during a long weekend or holiday.

Glamping, huh what's that?

Glamping is the term used for fancy camping or glamourous camping. This basically breaks down to enjoying the great outdoors in a cozy, amenity-filled shelter such as a tent, cabin or cottage. This fast growing trend is very popular today and according to Forbes, there are steps being taken to provide accreditation by the American Glamping Association.

Larsmont Cottages, Minnesota

Larsmont Cottages is located less than a 3 hour drive from Minneapolis and 20 minutes away from the historic port town of Duluth, on the North Shore of Lake Superior. There are two ways you can enjoy glamping here. The first is to find a night to rent using the internet. I always use Hotels.com (so I can rack up a free night after 10 nights). The second way to stay at Larsmont Cottages is to actually purchase a quarter share of these luxury homes. I discovered this from talking to an owner around a campfire during Labor Day weekend. As an owner, you get 13 weeks of access in one year. You can learn more about the benefits of being an owner on the real estate page of Larsmont Cottage's website.

The amenities definitely define "glamping" because after you check-in the main building you'll notice there is a restaurant (Ledge Rock Grill), an indoor swimming pool, wood-fired Finnish sauna, exercise room, outdoor hot tub, a gift shop and a space to reserve for a wedding or other private function.

After we grabbed our keys to our "Cottage Guest Room", we were welcomed with a friendly handwritten message, a bottle of iced champagne and queen-sized bed with soft down comforter and goose down pillows. The room also had a private bathroom. It was very cozy to say the least.

Outside, you'll have access to the fire pits, which they will light for you as soon as the sun starts to set. There are plenty of adirondack chairs and firewood to enjoy a cozy evening around a campfire rights on the banks of Lake Superior. I should also mention that you get a free smores kit (comes with a metal skewer, graham crackers, chocolate and marshmallows) when you check-in, but make sure you ask for it. You can also bring your own drinks and food (we brought some brats to cook over the fire).

What else is around?

Now that we've covered all the comfortable things Larmont Cottages offers, you might get bored and want to explore the surrounding area. Lucky for you, there are plenty of things to do around Larsmont Cottages.

You could head to Duluth, which I mentioned is only 20 minutes away for some fantastic BBQ at OMC Smokehouse, then have it delivered to you while you enjoy a craft beer at Bent Paddle Brewing or if you want to go shopping, why not grab some tough fire hose pants at Duluth Trading Company.

There are also a couple casinos nearby and if you want to visit another state, Superior, Wisconsin is the closest town.

If you head northeast, you could drive a couple hours to up to Ontario, Canada. If you don't want to drive that far, you could enjoy some yummy North Shore Berry Pie at Rustic Inn Cafe, enjoy the views from the Split Rock Rockhouse or watch the sunset while drinking an Ode IPA at Castle Danger Brewery.

Whatever you decide to do, staying at Larsmont Cottages is a wonderful getaway from the Twin Cities. Larsmont Cottages is glamping at it's finest and you'll be happy to stay here and enjoy all of what the North Shore of Minnesota has to offer.

I need to give credit where credit is due. My wife and I would have never known about staying at Larsmont Cottages or any of the other things to do around the area without the expert guidance from our friend Tram who lives in nearby Minneapolis. Whenever possible always talk to locals wherever your travels may take you!
